Easy sambhar

vegetable less dal

You can add a dollop of ghee in the end for an excellent taste

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

    • ½ a cup toor dal
    • ½ a cup moong dal
    • 2 medium onions
    • 2 medium tomatoes
    • 2-3 cloves of garlic
    • 2 medium green chillies
    • 1 red chilly
    • 5-6 curry leaves
    • a small bunch of coriander
    • ½ tsp mustard seeds
    • ½ tsp cumin seeds
    • ½ tsp urad dal
    • ¼ tsp powdered hing
    • 1½ tsp sambhar powder(optional)
    • ½ tsp turmeric powder
    • 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
    • 4-5 teaspoons of oil
    • salt to taste


    1. Wash and soak both the dals at least for 15 minutes.

    2. Add sliced onions, diced tomatoes, green chillies, cloves of garlic and turmeric powder to the dal and pressure cook until soft

    3. Mash the dal mixture and add tamarind and salt to it.

    4. Add required amount of water and boil it once more for 2 minutes

    5. Heat oil in a pan splutter in the mustard, red chilly,cumin, urad, curry leaves, hing and sambhar powder.

    6. Add this mixture to the dal, garnish with coriander leaves and serve

    I cooked this tonite and I must say it turned out to be amazingly delicious..!! Just a suggestion that when u pressure cook the dal, u may wish to add all or few of the veggies like cauliflower, potatoes, green peas, corn, green beans, drumsticks and brinjal. Will be delicious and gud for health too. As a matter of fact, U may use Ghee instead of oil in the tadka.


    fianlly add some ghee.
