Dhansak Dal

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings


    • 1/3 cup tur dal,
    • 1/3 cup mung dal,
    • 1/3 cup masoor dal,
    • 1 medium brinjal sliced,
    • 3/4 tsp turmeric powder,
    • 4"pc cinnamon stick,
    • 6 cloves,
    • 8 curry patta,
    • 1-2 tsp salt,
    • 2 medium onions finely chopped,
    • 1 large tomato finely chopped,
    • 1 tsp tamarind soaked in 1/4 cup water,
    • 1 tbsp coriander finely chopped,
    • 4 tbsp veg oil/ghee.
    GRIND TO PASTE
    • 8 cloves garlic
    • 1" pc ginger root
    • 4-6 dry chillies
    • 2 heaped tsp coriander seeds
    • 4 cloves
    • 2 cardamom peeled
    • 2" pc cinnamon stick
    • 1½ tsp cumin seed

    Directions

    1. Wash dals and soak in water for 1 hour & drain.
    2. Put dals, brinjals in pressure cooker with turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, curry patta & salt. Add 2 cup water & pressure cook for 20 min.
    3. Remove spices & mash dals & vegetables through sieve.
    4. In another pan heat oil & fry onions in it till golden.
    5. Drain excess oil leaving 1 tbsp oil in pan.
    6. Add masala paste and cook for 10 min
    7. Then add tomato and cook for 5 min.
    8. Add dal mixture & 1 cup water. Add tamarind to the dal mixture. Cook for 3 more min.
    9. Garnish it with finely chopped corriander.
    10. You can eat it with chapati or rice 

    Note: you can even add boiled rice if desired, cook for 5 min and serve with fried rice.

    I feel you have left out the addition of pumpkin to the dhansak.

    i have not yet tried the dal. but the ingridients are simple including the process. i shall shortly try this dal and post my comments. thanks
