Bhindi Malai Curry

Spicy Bhindi cooked in coconut milk

Very tasty and nutritious recipe. This recipe is my own invention.

Ingredients vegetarian 2 servings

  • 300 gms. Okra
  • 2 nos. Onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp Garlic, paste
  • 1 tsp Ginger, paste
  • ¾ tsp Red Chili Powder
  • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ½ tsp Sugar
  • 3 nos. Cloves
  • 2 nos. Cardamom
  • 2 pieces Cinnamon, small
  • 1 no. Bay leaves
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk
  • 2 tbsps. Vegetable Oil
  • Salt to taste


  1. Heat the oil and add cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and Bay leaf and a pinch of sugar.
  2. Fry the thinly sliced onions till golden brown in colour.
  3. Add ginger garlic paste, turmeric, chillie paste and keep frying alternately with little coconut milk.
  4. After frying this masala thgorougly add bhindi and cover and cook for 3 -4 minutes. Stir fry.
  5. Add coconut milk, sugar and salt and cover and cook.
  6. When the oil leaves the sides take off the heat.
  7. Serve hot with steamed rice.



Oh my! This was so delicious! I took a chance with fresh okra (never liked it before)and easily followed the recipe - so delicious, and only made 1 spot on my clothing (turmeric)
