Empanadas

A Spanish Puff Pastry

This Pastry or Bread is served as an appetizer.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings


    • 3 cups Maida
    • Salt to taste
    • 3 tblsp Butter
    • Water to knead the dough
    for Filling :
    • 1/2 cup Basil leaves
    • 2 cups Mozarella cheese
    • 1 cup diced Tomatoes
    • 1 cup chopped Onions
    • 1 cup chopped Green Bell peppers (Capsicum)
    • 1/2 cup Black olives
    • 1 tsp Oregano powder
    • 1 tsp Black pepper powder
    • 5 Garlic cloves (finely chopped)
    • 1/2 cup Milk
    • Salt to taste

    Directions

    1. Prepare the semi-firm dough from the above mixture. Cover & keep aside for 45 mins.
    2. Mix well all the fillings ingredients together.
    3. Roll out the dough about 1/2 inch thick & with the help of a cutter or a bowl, cut round shapes.
    4. Place the filling on one side. Apply Water on the edge & cover the other half over it just like a Gujjiya. With the help of a fork seal the edges tighly. This also creates a design.
    5. Brush the top with little Milk & bake at 180 degree centigrade for about 20 mins or till golden brown. Serve hot with Tomato sauce.
     
    Note: Actually in place of Milk, Eggs are used. Add in 2 eggs instead of 1/2 cup Milk & also you can give an egg wash on top instead of Milk. Non Vegetarians can add Chicken in the fillings.
