Yam theeyal

side dish which goes well with rice,roti,idly and everything.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

    • 3 cups cubed yam
    • 3 tbl sp coriander  seeds
    • 5tblsp grated coconut
    • 4 red chillies
    • a small ball of tamarind
    • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1 tsp of diced onion and fenugreek for seasoning
    • 1 tsp cooking oil.
    • salt to taste


    1. boil the yam with turmeric powder
    2. soak tamarind with little  water
    3. dry fry coriander seeds and red chillies
    4. fry coconut separately till it becomes light brown in colour
    5. grind together coconut,coriander seeds,chillies and tamarind with enough water
    6. mash the yam lightly(discard the boiled water)
    7. mix with the ground masala
    8. add 2 cups of water and boil
    9. add required salt
    10. season with onion and fenugreek.
