Chicken Nihari

A very famous dish of indopak.

Ingredients non vegetarian 4 servings


    • 1/2 kg chicken with bones
    • 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste
    • 1/2 cup yogurt
    • 1 chopped onion
    • wheat flour 1/2 cup
    • 1 cup ghee
    • 2 tbsp red chilli powder
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
    • salt to taste
    • 1 tbsp funnel seeds
    • 1 tbsp dry ginger(sonth)
    • 4 green cardamoms
    • 2 black cardamoms
    • 5 cloves
    • 1 1/2 inch of cinnamon
    • 6 whole black pepper
    • 2 tbsp white cumin seeds
    • oil as req
    • water as req

    Directions

    1. Grind all hot spices along dried ginger and funnel seeds and keep aside.
    2. Heat a oil in a pan and fry onion till turn into golden brown then add chicken,ginger garlic paste,salt,turmeric and red chilli powder and cook for 2-3 minutes.
    3. Now add grind spices and whipped yogurt and stir well for 2 minutes.
    4. Now add water after a one boil cover it with lid till chicken is tender.
    5. Add flour in a little water and mix it very well now put this mixture in nihari and stir it well with low flame.
    6. Cover it with lid and cook till it turns in a thick gravy.
    7. Garnish with fried onion,lemon,chopped green chillies and ginger strips.
    8. Serve it with roghni naan.

    hi, when nihari is done then heat ghee in another pan and add 1 more sliced onion and fry till it turns into golden brown colour then add this tarka in nihari and cook for 10 min with low flame and for making garam masala u can also add 1 tbsp coriander seeds,1/2 tsp black cumin seeds,and 2 pinches of star aniseeds(baadiyaan k phool),2 pinches of nutmeg powder and 2 pinches of mace powder..for more good taste.if u cant use 1 cup ghee so u can 1/2 cup of ghee for tarka.

    Hi ! Salma ... Nice recipe . Gud idea using Wheat flour for thickening your gravy . Well you've mentioned 1 cup of ghee and when does that go into the gravy ? ? ?

    walaikum as salaam imran, i m fine here by the grace of GOD. U never thought but i always thought that we cook nihari always with beaf or mutton why not with chicken so 1stly i cooked it with chicken at home then shared and it is also good with chicken. after trying must tell me how was that. bye
