Oma Baath

Rice dish made from Ajwain seeds

Oma is the Kannada word for Ajwain seeds. These seeds are excellent for digestion. This receipe was shown by a famous Singer on a cookery show.

Ingredients vegetarian 2 servings


    • 2 tsp Oma  (Ajwain seeds)
    • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
    • 1/2 cup chopped Onion
    • 5-6 Dry Red chillie + 2 Red Chillies (half broken)
    • 4-5 tblsp grated Dry Coconut
    • 2 cloves Garlic
    • a small piece of Tamarind
    • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
    • a pinch of Asafoetida (hing)
    • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
    • 2 tsp Urad dal
    • 2 tsp Channa dal
    • 1 sprig Curry leaves
    • 1 cup Cooked Rice
    • Salt to taste

    Directions

    1. Grind Oma, Black pepper, Onion, Dry Red chillies, Dry Coconut, Garlic & Tamarind to a paste with very little water. Donot make a fine paste.
    2. Heat Oil in a kadai. Add Hing & Mustard seeds. After the seeds crackle, add Urad dal, Channa dal, broken Red chillies & Curry leaves.
    3. Add the ground masala to the kadai & fry for 1-2 mins. Turn off the heat. Add Cooked Rice & Salt. Mix well & serve hot.
