Tomato chutney

Spicy Tomato sauce

Have enjoyed this since my childhood. A perfect accompaniment for all tiffins

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

    • 1 kg Tomatoes
    • 2 tsp Mustard seeds
    • 2 tsp Channa dal
    • ½tsp Methi( fenugreek ) seeds
    • 2 Green chilies
    • 2 Red chillies
    • Jaggery-little ( optional)
    • 1 tbsp Oil
    • ½ bunch Green coriander leaves
    • Salt- to taste


    1. Cut the tomatoes into small pieces.
    2. In a pan take the oil and add mustard seeds. After they splutter add the channa dal and fry till golden.
    3. Add the methi seeds followed by add the red and green chillies. 
    4. Add the cut tomatoes and allow to cook till all the water is absorbed and the tomatoes are cooked.
    5. Cool this paste and grind with green coriander leaves and salt.
    6. A little jaggery can also be added while grinding to enhance the taste.

    Recipe is good , i improve its flavour by giving tempering of chop garlic and curry leaf.
