Mutton-Yam Koottu (side dish)

Mutton and yam pieces cooked with spices

very tasty,very filling side-dish and goes very well with plain basmati rice,pulav,biryani,ghee-rice or jeera rice.

Ingredients non vegetarian 6 servings


    • 300 g mutton pieces-boneless(12 pieces)
    • 250 g
    •  Yam - Peeled and cut into 1 inch size pieces
    • 1 big onion - pasted
    • 1 tomato-pasted
    • 1/2 cup pine nuts
    • 4 green chillies-slit lengthwise
    • 1 tsp chilli powder
    • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
    • 1 tsp fresh pepper powder
    • 1 tsp cumin powder
    • 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
    • ground spices of (1 tsp saunf,1 cardamom,1 cinnamon stick)
    • 1 cup thick coconut milk
    • 2 cups second coconut milk
    • 1 bay leaf-crushed
    • 1 1/2 salt-or needed
    • few mint and coriander leaves
    • 1 tbsp refined oil (or) olive oil

    Directions

    1. Heat oil in a pressure pan,saute bay leaf,onion paste,ginger-garlic paste and tomato paste for 3 mins at least.
    2. Add mutton pieces,red chilli powder,fresh pepper powder,turmeric powder,cumin powder,ground spices powder,few mint and coriander leaves and salt(1 tsp).Cover and cook for 5 mins after mixing them well.
    3. Add green chillies,yam pieces, pine nuts,coriander powder,thick coconut milk and the second coconut milk and cover and cook upto 5 whistles.Turn off the flame and leave it for 10 mins for the pressure to be released.
    4. Open the pressure pan and mix well. Check for salt. Add 1/2 tsp salt more and mix well.Cook till the water runs dry for few more mins without closing the pressure-pan lid and stir continuously.
    5. Serve this with plain basmati rice, pulav, biryani, ghee-rice or jeera rice.

    Dear Salma,sorry for late reply.yam is suran in Hindi or elephant's foot in English.

    Mr.Padmanabhan,u can peel and cut the Yam into 1 or 1 1/4 inch size pieces only cause u r pressure cooking it with mutton pieces upto 5 whistles .(if u add 1/2 inch size pieces,yam will get over-cooked or mashed).

    Hi! christy instead of 1 inch pieces of yam 1/2 inch will be better because easy to boil and gravy will be tasty. napmallya@gmail.com
