Puri Potato Masala - a variation

Potato Side dish for Puri

This masala is an accompaniment to Puri in TamilNadu.Rarely Puri misses this taste-match(side dish).Many Tamilians add tomato to add taste and flavour.Try this once with Puri and U will ask both more.Here is the recipe.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

    • 2 big potatoes
    • 1  big onion,sliced lengthwise
    • 1 small size tomato-sliced or 1/2 big tomato-sliced
    • 1/4 tsp grated ginger
    • 3 green chillies,slit lengthwise
    • a pinch of turmeric powder
    • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    • 2 tsp split chanadal(kadalai paruppu)
    • 1/2 tsp split uraddal(optioal)-skinless
    • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1 sprig curry leaves
    • few coriander leaves
    • a pinch of asafoetida(optional)-little only
    • 250 ml water
    • 1 1/2 tsp salt or needed as per taste


    1. Pressure cook potatoes upto 4 whistles with water covering the potatoes.Leave this for sometime to release the pressure.Peel off the skin and cut into cubes.Mash 1/3rd of the boiled potatoes.
    2. Heat oil in a kadai.Add mustard seeds,split uraddal(optional),split chanadal,asafotida(optional),cumin seeds and curry leaves.
    3. Add grated ginger,slit green chillies and onion slices.Saute till this turns little brown.
    4. Then add tomato slices and saute this till tomato begins to melt.
    5. Add the boiled potato pieces and the mashed potato pieces together with turmeric powder and salt.Let this cook for a minute.
    6. Add water and chopped coriander leaves.Mix this well.Let this cook 3-4 mins till this thickens.
    7. Puri Masal is ready to accompany Puri now.
