South Indian Dal

Ingredients vegetarian 2 servings

    • 1/2 cup Toor Dal
    • 5-6 Tablespoon of Either Lauki/ Safed Bhopla
    • 1 small Tomato
    • 2-3 Tamarind pieces
    • 2-3 Green Chillies
    • 1-2 pinches of pepper powder
    • 2-3 Tablespoon coconut(Fresh)
    • Coconut oil (For seasoning)
    • 6-7 Curryleaves
    • 1/2 Teaspoon Urad Dal
    • 1/2 Teaspoon Rai( Mustard seeds)
    • 1/4 teaspoon Hing (asafoetida)
    • Salt ( As per taste)


    1. Wash Tur dal, add to it, the vegetable cut in medium size, tomato cut & Green chillies.
    2. Pressure cook them till soft.
    3. Soak the tamarind in 1/4 cup water.
    4. In a Kadahi, put the tamrind pulp, add hing, wait till it comes to a boil. Add the cooked dal (Not to be mashed) and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes.
    5. For the seasoning, take the coconut oil, add urad dal, rai and wait till the oil splutters, add the curry leaves. Add the seasoning to the cooked dal.
    6. Serve hot either with Chapathis and pickle/ with rice & crispy papadams.
