Parippu Vada

Lentil vada deep fried in coconut oil

This hot and spicy recipe is a favourite among Keralites. It is an ideal snack with hot steaming coffee.

Ingredients vegetarian 2 servings

  • 1½ cups Red Gram (split), soaked overnight
  • 6 nos. Red Chilies
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 2 tbsps. Coriander Seeds, slightly crushed
  • 2 nos. Green Chilies, chopped
  • 20 nos. Curry Leaf, finely chopped
  • 20 nos. Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Ginger, grated
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut for frying, oil


  1. From the soaked dal, seperate 1/2 cup dal and put the remaining dal into the mixer.
  2. Add haldi and red chillies and some water used for soaking (add water only if required, as the paste should be dry)
  3. Grind to a coarse paste.
  4. Remove the dry mixture into a bowl.
  5. Add to this the remaining soaked dal, crushed coriander seeds, chopped green chillies, chopped curry leaves, chopped madras onions and salt to taste.
  6. Mix well.
  7. Make small balls of the mixture and flatten it in the palm of your hands.
  8. Fry in hot cocont oil.
  9. Serve hot with coconut chutney.



is this red gram the same as Laal Masoor ki daal?
