Quick, easy & tasty sidedish that goes well with Plain rice & chapati.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings


    • 1 cup Cayote Squash
    • 1 tsp Mustard seeds (Rai)
    • 1 tsp Urad dal
    • 2 tsp Channa dal
    • 2 Dry Red chillies
    • a pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
    • 3 tsp Vegetable Oil
    • 1 sprig of Curry leaves
    • Salt to taste.
     Grind together:
    •  1/2 cup Fresh Coconut
    •  1 tsp Cumin seeds (Jeera)
    •  4-5 Green chillies

    Directions

    1. Cut Cayote into pieces & boil them. keep aside.
    2. Grind Coconut, cumin seeds & green chillies with little water untill it is smooth.
    3. Heat Oil in a kadai. Add Hing & mustard seeds.
    4. When the seeds crackle, add Urad dal, Channa dal, Curry leaves & Dry red chillies. Fry untill the dal's turn light brown.
    5. Add in the boiled Cayote pieces & fry for a minute.
    6. Add the ground paste with little water to get an consistency of a gravy. Boil for 5-6 mins.
    7. Add Salt, mix well.
    8. Serve with Plain Rice just like Rasam or Sambar. By keeping the consistency thick, it can be served with Chapati.

     Note : Can add any other vegetables like potato, papdi, white pumpkin, etc.

    Hi Neelam...Cayote is also called as Chow Chow, SeemeBadhnekaayi, Bangalore Katrikkai, SeemaVankaya, Sheema Katrika, Ishkus, DasGoos. I was able to findout only this. Hope it will help you.

    Hi Usha...sorry i forgot to mention in my receipe. At the end before removing from heat add in boiled Toor Dal about 1/2 cup.

    this dish is very nice.you can add 2tbsp of cooked moong dal to make it thick to go with chappatis.it will be more nutritious also
