Puri Masal

this delicious masal is a side dish to south indian puri as how puri goes well with srikand in maharashtra.Besan and tomato r added to bombay chutney,not for this masal but some add 1 tbsp of besan mixed with 2 tsp water to it.urad dal is also optional.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

    • 2 potatoes
    • 1 onions,sliced lengthwise
    • 1 tsp ginger,chopped finely
    • 3 green chilli,chopped finely
    • 1/2 tsp haldi
    • For Seasoning:1/2 tsp mustard,1 tsp chana dal each,4-5 curry leaves,1/2 tsp hing
    • 2 cups water
    • Salt,to taste


    1. Cook potato in 2 whistles.allow it to cool for sometime.Peel the skin and cut into cubes.
    2. Heat oil in a kadai.Splutter mustard,chana dal to golden brown and add hing,curry leaves,ginger,green chilli.saute for a minute and add onion.saute till brownish.
    3. Then add potato,shd not be fully mashed.half cubes shd be seen in the gravy.
    4. Let potato onion and other ingredients blend well and then add water.
    5. Add salt.Cook till it starts boiling & thickening.
    6. Masal is ready.Great taste to puri.

    Note:Whistle sound may be 1 siti also.depending on the aloo type,cook potato.

    I tried this out and my husband said it reminded him of home. I just dec the amount of ginger as my kids r not fond of it that much but even then it turned out yummy. U r so authentic and traditional unlike me who due to living abroad has fallen into a mixture of tastes. Thanks allot.
