Shorshey Pomfret

Fried pomfret with mustard gravy

A traditional Bengali cuisine.

Ingredients non vegetarian 1 servings

    • 1 Pomfret fish, medium size
    • Mustard Seed ( yellow)
    • Garlic       
    • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
    • Salt to taste
    • Coriander leaf:  finely chopped
    • 4 Green Chillies
    • ½ tsp Black cumin
    • Mustard Oil to fry.


    1. Cut and make pomfret horizontally equal. Sprinkle turmeric powder and salt in pomfret and mix well.
    2. Make a paste of mustard with garlic and 2pcs. Of green chili with a pinch of salt. Add little water while grinding. Heat oil. Make the fire in medium heat. Fry pomfret pieces both the side till golden brown. Remove and keep aside.
    3. Add little oil in the pan and heat. Add black cumin seed. Pour mustard paste, salt to taste and turmeric powder with half a cup of water.
    4. Let the jhol boil, add fried pomfret and cook in gravy. Add slited green chili. Remove when the consistency of the liquid will turn thick..
    5. Serve hot with steamed plain rice.
    6. Sprinkle 1 tsp of mustard oil for better pungent taste. Garnish with coriander leaf.
