Festive rice and dal dish

Pongal is a kind of khichdi prepared in south india. A sweet version is prepared at the time of pongal festival from where it derives it's name.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

  • 1 cup Rice
  • 1 cup Green Gram (split)
  • 15 nos. Black Pepper
  • 1 no. Bay leaves
  • 2½ tbsps. Clarified Butter
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 2 pinches of Asafoetida
  • Salt to taste


  1. Wash and drain the dal and rice together.
  2. Place in a colander till all the water is drained.
  3. Heat ghee, add cumin seeds, bay leaf, black pepper corns, asafoetida, rice and dal.
  4. Gently stir till you get the aroma (5 minutes). Add water and salt and cook covered till done.
  5. While cooking it is important to keep adding more water if the recipe turns dry.
  6. Serve hot with yoghurt.

add a big spoon of melted ghee just before serving indivually and goes well with any roasted and fried papads

If you add an inch of ginger cut in tiny pieces and green chillies(cut in round shape)while frying the other stuff and add corriander leaves while garnishing. It will increase the taste.Have a great Pongal.


if you pressure cook the rice and dal ,it will save the hard labour work and time.
