This is a popular breakfast dish in the southern part of India.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

  • 1 cup Cream of Wheat
  • 1 no. Onion, cut lengthwise
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • ¼ tsp Mustard seeds (black)
  • ¼ tsp Black gram (split)
  • 1 no. Cashews
  • ¼ tsp Lime juice
  • 2 cups Peas
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • 1 tsp Ginger, paste
  • 1 no. Green Chilies, diced


  1. Dry roast cream of wheat on a dry pan for 5 minutes and set aside.
  2. Put two tablespoons of oil in a pan and heat.
  3. Add mustard seeds, Urad dal, cashewnut, and garlic clove. Wait till mustard seeds stop spluttering.
  4. Add the onion, chili, and ginger and fry till the onion turns brown.
  5. Add cream of wheat and fry for 3-5 minutes. Add salt and peas.
  6. Add two cups of boiling water and stir for 2 minutes. (Switch off the heat as soon as the water is poured.)
  7. Cover the vessel for 4 minutes.
  8. Add lemon juice. Serve

Dear Rajiv, I tried your upama receipe,for 14 People & every one loved it. I didnot used garlic. Lina


Rajiv Dear, some of your recipes are good, but as a south Indian I want to let you know that We dont add Garlic for any kind of UPMA. add more cashews and lemon juice should be added at the time of serving. pls check my recipe for this.


This is not the traditional upma- which is sans garlic,lemon juice.The ingredients needs to be reviewed what does "1 no cashews" mean?
