Shrimp Saalan

Shrimp cooked with onion, tomato and some spices.

A good gravy dish which can be served with rice as well as chapati.

Ingredients non vegetarian 4 servings

  • 1 lb Prawns
  • 3 tbsps. Vegetable Oil
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 no. Onion, medium size
  • 4 nos. Chili, Thai chilli peppers finely chopped
  • ¼ tsp Garlic, paste
  • ¼ tsp Ginger, paste
  • 1 no. Tomato, small finely chopped
  • ½ tsp Coriander powder
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ¼ tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 cup Cilantro, finely chopped
  • 2 tsps. Lime juice
  • Salt to taste

1/2 cup water

Directions

  1. Peel, clean and wash the shrimps and then add some salt and keep aside.
  2. Add oil in the cooking pan. Let it heat up a little.
  3. Now add cumin seeds. Let the seeds splutter.
  4. When the cumin seeds start spluttering add onion and chilli peppers.
  5. When the onion starts turning brown add ginger paste, garlic paste and fry a little.
  6. Then add tomatoes and fry till the tomatoes are completely cooked.
  7. Then add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and stir a little.
  8. Now add 3/4 of the finely chopped cilantro, lemon juice and stir a liitle.
  9. Then add the shrimps and water. Add salt if necessary.
  10. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the gas flame and let it cook till the shrimps are done. (about 10 mins)
  11. Serve hot garnished with the remaining cilantro.
  12. Best as a side dish with rice or can be even served with chapati or parathas.
