Yam and Channa Masala

Yam pieces and Channa dhal cooked with spices

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings


    • 100 gms yam(peeled and cut into small pieces)
    • 1 cup channa dhal(soaked for 3 hours and boiled till soft with salt and water)
    • 1 onion(small-sized,finely chopped)
    • 1 tomato (finely chopped)
    • 1 tsp mustard seeds
    • 1/2 tsp asafoetida powder
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1/2 cup grated coconut
    • 1 tbsp coriander seeds
    • 6 red chillies
    • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp(gooseberry sized tamarind)
    • a sprig curry leaves
    • few coriander leaves
    • 2 tsp salt
    • 2 tsp refined oil
    • 2 tsp ghee

    Directions

    1. Soak channa dhal for 3 hours and boil them in water with salt till soft.keep it aside.
    2. Heat little oil in a non-stick frying pan , dry-saute coriander seeds,red chillies and grated coconut.grind them using mixer and keep it aside.
    3. Heat the remaining oil and ghee in that frying pan,fry mustard seeds,curry leaves,chopped onions and chopped tomatoes,one by one for 2 mins.
    4. Add tamarind pulp ,salt ,asafoetida powder and turmeric powder and allow it to boil till the raw odour diminishes.
    5. Add Yam pieces and cook for 5 mins.
    6. Add channa dhall and the ground masala with few coriander leaves and cook for 5 more mins.turn off the flame.
    7. Serve this masala with rice or chapathis,idlis.etc.,
