Manathakali Kozhambu

Manathakali is a type of keerai and from flower green cherry comes and it changes to dark purple to blackish.soak those cherries in salted yoghurt and dry it in the sun till it becomes crisp.Otherwise its readily available in all stores.

Ingredients vegetarian 2 servings


    • small lemon sized tamarind
    • 2 tbsp manathakalivehtal
    • 3 cups water
    • 1/4 tsp methidana
    • 1/2 tsp chanadal
    • 2 tsp Sambar powder
    • 1/2 tsp hing
    • 1/2 tsp mustard
    • 1 tsp jaggery powdered
    • 1 tbsp gingely oil
    • 1 tsp ghee
    • Salt,to taste

    Directions

    1. Soak tamarind in hot water,take out the flavour and do twice and discard the pulp.take2 cups juice.again 1/2 cup juice.
    2. Heat 1 tsp ghee in a kadai and roast the manathakali vethal and it should become black from brown and crispy. Aroma should come out of it.
    3. Remove from gas and keep it aside.
    4. Heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard, chana dal, methi dana and hing.Roast them well to golden brown.
    5. Pour the tamarind water and after the raw smell goes,add sambar powder.Stir well.
    6. It boils well and it reduces its quantity.
    7. Add Manathakali vethal, jaggery and salt.Boil once and remove from heat.
    8. Tasty kozhambu is ready. Serve with rice and arisi appalam.

    Note: If manathakali is not roasted well it will be bitter.As already salt is added in vethal,please reduce salt in kozhambu.If u want to add rice flour for more quantity u can add.
